PURPOSE: A method for preparing zirconia powder is provided, to prepare zirconia powder easily in a short time without the hydrolysis process. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of calcining a zirconia salt under the atmosphere containing HCl. Preferably the method comprises the steps of precalcining a zirconia salt to obtain a precalcined product; and calcining the precalcined product under the atmosphere containing HCl. Preferably the zirconia salt comprises zirconium oxychloride, and/or compounds or oxides of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Y, Ce, Ca, Ti and Mg; and the calcination is carried out at a temperature of 700-1,100 deg.C.
