PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for detecting a preamble of a packet data transport system are provided, which detects the existence of a preamble transported through 2 slots in a mobile communication system supporting a packet data service and a voice service at the same time. CONSTITUTION: According to the apparatus for a mobile station to detect a preamble transported from a base station in a mobile communication system, a memory stores information and threshold values as to a chip accumulation period corresponding to each of a plurality of data transmission rates. The first accumulator(515) accumulates preamble as much as the chip accumulation period less than one slot, and outputs the first accumulation value, when the chip accumulation period corresponding to a data transmission rate requested to the base station by the mobile station does not exceed one slot. The second accumulator(517) accumulates preamble as much as a chip accumulation period larger than one slot, and outputs the second accumulation value, when the chip accumulation period exceeds one slot. And a controller(514) outputs a control signal indicating the start of a demodulation by comparing the first accumulation value or the second accumulation value with the threshold value corresponding to the chip accumulation period stored in the memory.
