PURPOSE: A system and a method for detecting contact between an electrode and tissue is provided to detect an electrode-tissue contact by comparing electrode-tissue contact using a contact electrode to a reference electrode having no contact with tissue. CONSTITUTION: A system for detecting contact of an electrode with tissue comprises a catheter(20), a reference electrode(25), and a contact detection circuit(25). The catheter(20) includes a signal generator(28) for sending test signals to the contact electrode and to the reference electrode, and a circuit to measure a differential electrical response to the test signals. The differential electrical response indicates the contact of the contact electrode with tissue. The contact electrode is positioned at the catheter distal tip. The reference electrode is positioned on the catheter.
