PURPOSE: Lubricating composition for cylinders of marine two-stroke diesel engines is provided, which raises temperature of the onset of scuffing-type mechanical wear of the cylinder walls of the engine during its operation. CONSTITUTION: A combination of a cylinder of a two-stroke cross-head marine diesel engine with a cylinder lubricant comprises: a base stock of lubricating viscosity, in a major amount; at least one overbased metal detergent, in a minor amount; and at least one auxiliary, preferably ashless or non-metal-containing, additive component, in a minor amount, and an oil-soluble sulfur-containing compound, and/or an oil-soluble phosphorus-containing compound, wherein the cylinder is characterized by a power output of 4000 or greater, such as 4200 or greater, referably 4500 or greater, more preferably in the range of 4500 to 6000, kW.
