Summary:PURPOSE: A method for connecting a field emission fiber to a substrate both electrically and mechanically is provided for an improved plat panel display. CONSTITUTION: A method for connecting a field emission fiber to a substrate both electrically and mechanically comprises: placing a field emission fiber across a substrate and centering the field emission fiber over the area where connection is to be made; placing a metal ribbon over the fiber with the dimension along the length of the metal ribbon essentially perpendicular to the axis of the field emission fiber and such that the metal ribbon extends over the field emission fiber with each end portion of the metal ribbon in direct contact with the substrate; and bonding the metal ribbon to the substrate and to the field emission fiber by ultrasonic, thermocompression or compression bonding.
