PURPOSE: Gelling agent and gel compositions are prepared, which are characterized by using fatty acids or higher alcohols which are liquid at normal temperatures instead of the conventional nonionic surfactants, CONSTITUTION: A gelling or emulsifying agent prepared by mixing a water-swellable clay mineral with a quaternary ammonium salt base cationic surfactant and a fatty acid or higher alcohol that is liquid at ordinary temperatures; and gel or emulsion compositions made by using the same. The use of this agent makes it possible to convert various oil components into gel or emulsion compositions excellent in stability, safety and usability. The gel or emulsion compositions made by using the agent are favorably usable as bases for cosmetics, quasi drugs or the like. Further, sun screen preparations comprising the emulsion compositions and ultra violet screening powders are excellent in tight adhesion to the skin and water resistance and exhibit such excellent usability that the unnatural whiteness due to the ultra violet screening powder is not conspicuous even when the skin sweats or is brought into contact with water during the action in the sea or a pool. Accordingly, a necessary amount of an ultra violet screening powder can be added without worry about the unnatural whiteness, which is advantageous in the case wherein particularly high ultra violet screening effect is desired. 수팽윤성 점토광물과 4차 암모늄염형 양이온 계면활성제와 상온액체의 지방산 또는 고급알코올을 혼합하여 얻어지는 겔화제 또는 유화제, 및 이를 사용한 겔조성물 또는 유화조성물이다. 본 발명에 의하면 광범위한 유분에 첨가혼합하더라도 안정성, 안전성, 사용성에 우수한 겔조성물 또는 유화조성물을 제공할 수가 있다. 본 발명의 겔화제 또는 유화제를 사용한 겔조성물 또는 유화조성물은, 예를들면, 화장품, 의약부외품등의 기제로서 바람직하게 사용된다. 또, 상기 유화조성물에, 자외선방어제분말을 배합한 피부가 햇볕에 타서 검게 되는 일을 방지하는 화장재료는, 살갗에의 밀착성이 좋고, 내수성에 우수하고, 땀 또는 바다나 풀에서의 활동에 동반하는 물과의 접촉에 의해서도, 자외선방어제 분말에 의한 흰색의 두드러짐이 없는 우수한 사용성을 갖는 것이다. 따라서, 흰색의 두드러짐을 마음에 두지 않고, 필요량의 자외선 방어제 분말을 배합할 수 있으므로, 특히 높은 자외선방어효과를 기대하는 경우에 유용하다.
