PURPOSE: A cosmetic is provided to suppress not only the formation of melanin and the genesis of erythema but also the genesis of inflammation and to improve the retention of moisture for contributing to the improvement of skin quality and the prevention of aging while exhibiting low stimulation and high stability. CONSTITUTION: A cosmetic which suppresses not only the formation of melanin and the genesis of erythema but also the genesis of inflammation and, further, improves the retention of moisture to thereby contribute to the improvement of skin quality and the prevention of aging and which exhibits low stimulation and high stability. The cosmetic contains a 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid derivative represented by general formula (I) wherein R1 represents hydrogen, C1¯20 alkyl, C7¯9 aralkyl, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal; and each of R2 and R3 represents hydrogen or -COR4 (R4 being C1¯5 alkyl, C1¯3 alkenyl, methoxy, ethoxy, etc.) provided that R2 and R3 are not simultaneously hydrogen atoms. 멜라닌의 생성 및 홍반의 발생을 억제하는 위에, 염증의 발생을 억제하고, 보습성을 향상시킴으로써, 피부질의 개선과 노화방지에 기여하는 외에, 자극성이 낮고, 안정성에도 뛰어난 화장료를 제공하게 된다. 이 화장료는, 일반식(I): (I) [식중, R은 수소원자, 탄소수 1∼20의 알킬기, 탄소수 7∼9의 아릴알킬기, 알칼리금속원자 또는 알칼리토류금속원자; R및 R은 수소원자, -COR(R는 탄소수 1∼5의 알킬기, 탄소수 1∼3의 알케닐기, 메톡시기, 에톡시기 등을 표시함(R및 R은 동시에 수소원자는 아님)]로 표시되는 2,5-디히드록시벤조산유도체를 함유하고 있다.
