A system for treating ballast water and a method for driving the same are provided to remove underwater organisms contained in the ballast water effectively, by using a filtering unit and an electrolyzing unit, and operate continuously and back-wash automatically the system for treating ballast water. A filtering unit(110) filters off underwater organisms contained in ballast water. A washing unit(120) washes the filtering unit. A main body(230) includes the filtering unit and the washing unit. The main body further includes one or more inflow pipes(210a,210b) and one or more outflow pipes(220a,220b). An electrolyzing unit(130) sterilizes the ballast water using products, which are generated by electrolyzing the ballast water flowing out through the outflow pipes. A controller controls the driving of the filtering unit, the washing unit, and the electrolyzing unit.
