Summary:PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for switching a path using an order-wire in an optical transmission system composed as a ring network are provided to perform a path switching in itself using an EOW(Engineering Order-Wire). CONSTITUTION: A plurality of slave order-wire units(302,304,306) recognize the cutting of an optical line, output a path change request signal for requesting the change of a data transmission/receipt path in case that it is impossible to transmit/receive data to a data transmission/receipt path when a ring network is a normal state, and block transmission/receipt channel connection of a side in which the optical line is cut. A master order-wire unit(300) receives the path change request signal transmitted from the slave order-wire units(302,304,306) and switches the data transmission/receipt path to an opposite direction of a normal path.
