Summary:PURPOSE: A method for optimizing a read channel for controlling a servo is provided to detect an optimum read channel value for a detect mode and a tracing mode by using a read channel optimizing algorithm for each mode. CONSTITUTION: Addresses for servo field are read from a disk while varying first read channel variables to store an address error count value in the first store unit. In case of changing the number of the first read channel variables over an established changing number, a minimum address error count value is established as an optimum value for a detect mode read channel. Location error signal levels are stored in a second store unit while changing second read channel variables. In case of changing the number of the second variables over an established changing number, a minimum location error signal level is established as an optimum value of a tracking mode read channel. The optimum values are supplied to a read channel circuit in operating corresponding mode.
