Summary:A novel recording film has, on at least one side of a transparent substrate, a single ink take-up layer consisting of: (A) a vinyl alcohol group-containing polymer; (B) polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP); and (C) a water-soluble polyester resin. C Also claimed is the production of the film by coating a transparent substrate with an aqueous or aqueous-alcohol dispersion of (A)-(C), and then drying at 120-160 deg C. Preferably, the transparent substrate is of polyester, polyamide, polyvinyl acetate, PVC, polycarbonate and/or polyethylene terephthalate and is 50-150 mu m thick. (A) has saponification degree of 80-99 mol %, cationic group content of 0.1-10 mol % and molecular weight of 800-30000. (B) has Mw 1-3 million, and the weight ratio (B):(A) is 10:1-1:10. (C) has molecular weight 10000-15000 and Tg 33-48 deg C and is used at 1-30 parts weight per 100 parts weight (A) plus (B). The ink take-up layer is 1-20 mu m thick and can also contain (D) 0.1-2 weight % (based on total weight of (A)-(C)) of an activator, especially organic particles or SiO2 of particle size 0.1-12 mu m and/or (E) 0.005-1 weight % (based on total weight of (A)-(C)) of each of a surfactant and an antifoam.
