Summary:The present invention relates to the use of acylated alpha -amino acid ester derivatives, some of which are known, as insect and mite repellents. The derivatives used according to the invention have the formula in which R stands for hydrogen or for an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl radical, R and R are identical or different and stand for optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl radicals and R and R stand for hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl or, together with the atom to which they are bonded, form an optionally substituted monocyclic ring.
