PURPOSE:To have a separator with excellent mechanical strength and the electrolyte retaining ability by molding a synthetic material of polyolefin type with different contents of silica into sheet, putting such sheets one over another, and providing a separator. CONSTITUTION:An admixture in pellets consisting of polyethylene, silica fine powder, and plastitizer is hot kneaded, extruded, and molded into sheet. In the same manner an admixture with less silica fine powder is turned into sheet followed by placing one over another and consolidating by the use of a roll press, and dioctyl phthalate is extracted by trichlorethylene to form fine pores. Thus, a desired sheet is accomplished. Thereby mechanical strength of the separator is secured by a layer with less silica content, while another layer with higher silica content provides enhanced anti-acidity with practicability of retaining the necessary amount of electrolytic liquid.
