Summary:PURPOSE:To make a dedicated display panel unnecessary and display the different shape at the same position by arranging many grids and segments in a lattice shape and coating phosphors on the segments at the intersections. CONSTITUTION:N segments 1 and M grids 2 are crossed in a lattice shape, and phosphors 4 are coated on the segments 1 at the intersections. If the grid 2 and the segment 1 are at the potential higher than that of a filament 6, phosphors 4 are illuminated, if the grid 2 or the segment 1 is at the negative potential than the filament 6, phosphors 4 are not illuminated. On the other hand, when the address 17 and data 16 from RAM or ROM 18 are applied to the segment 1 and the grid 2 via a segment driver 13 and a grid driver 14 respectively, an optional shape can be displayed.
