Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a Zr(CN)-based ceramic sintered body having high strength, high hardness, high wear resistance and high density and useful as a cutting tool material, etc., by mixing one or more among Cr3C2, Cr7C2 and Cr4C with Zr(CN) in a prescribed ratio and sintering the mixture. CONSTITUTION:Zr(CalphaNbeta) is obtd. by dissolving N2 in ZrC so as to regulate the ratio between carbon and nitrogen (alpha:beta) to (10-90):(90-10). Powder of the Zr(CalphaNbeta) having <=2mum average particle size is mixed with 20-99wt.% powder of one or more among Cr3C2, Cr7C2 and Cr4C having <=2mum average particle size. The powdery mixture is filled into dies such as graphite dies and sintered by heating at 1,300-1,700 deg.C for 10-20min under 50-300kg/cm pressure applied to the dies in a neutral or reducing atmosphere such as Ar.
