Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in the yield occurring in the defects of respective films and the complication of structure by adhering 1st and 2nd substrate units to each other by interposing an ion supply film consisting of a gel-like electrolytic material between respective color forming films. CONSTITUTION:The 1st substrate unit 11 having the 1st electrode film 14 and color forming film 15 and the 2nd substrate unit 12 having the 2nd electrode film 19 and 2nd color forming film 20 are respectively separately produced and these substrate units 11, 12 are adhered to each other via the ion supply film 21 consisting of the gel-like electrolytic material. The required measure when there are defects in the respective electrode films 14, 19 and the color forming films 15, 20 is, therefore, to simply discard the unit corresponding to such defects. The yield in the process is thereby improved. Since the coupling of the 1st and 2nd units 11, 12 is executed by utilizing the intrinsically necessary ion supply film, the complication of the structure of the electrochromic display element is obviated.
