Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a silhouette image of a distinct target, and to track the target with high accuracy by binarizing an input image, obtaining a target area image, and also, detecting an edge of the input image. CONSTITUTION:A binary threshold level setting circuit 2 measures a luminance statistic of the periphery of a target from an input image A, sets a threshold level SL1 by which a noise in the periphery of the target is not extracted easily and only the target is extracted easily, and gives it to a binarizing circuit 3. The circuit 3 executes binarization of the image A by the threshold level SL1, and obtains an area image B. An edge detecting circuit 4 executes an arithmetic operation with regard to the image A and obtains an edge image C. An edge binary threshold level setting circuit 5 measures a luminance statistic of the periphery of the target from the obtained image C, and sets a threshold level SL2 by which a noise of the periphery of the target is not extracted easily, and only an edge of the target is extracted easily. An edge image binarizing circuit 6 executes binarization of the image C by the threshold level SL2, and obtains a contour image D. The image D and B are sent to an image synthesizing circuit 7 and synthesizing by an OR circuit, two images are superposed and a silhouette image E of the target is obtained.
