PURPOSE:To avoid erroneous calculation of characteristic values resulting from erroneous setting of the measuring conditions, while improving reliability in the testing of a material, by arranging that a suitable measuring point can be designated while viewing the load-displacement diagram being indicated. CONSTITUTION:After the data of the displacement and load detected by a main body 10 of a material testing machine is A-D converted by an A/D converter 21, it is stored in a RAM 25 of a data processing unit 20. When a measuring item is selected through a keyboard 28, a CPU 23 displays to a CRT 26 the diagram showing the relation of the load and displacement on the basis of the displacement data and the load data recorded in the RAM 25. At the same time, the CPU 23 indicates a movable index on the diagram. Accordingly, an operator can designate a measuring point while the operator monitor the diagram shown on the CRT and moves the index through the keyboard 28. As a result, the CPU 23 processes the displacement data and the load data of the measuring point designated in accordance with the processing procedure with respect to the measuring item selected by the keyboard 28 from among those procedures stored in a ROM 24.
