Summary:PURPOSE:To smoothly and speedily set various kinds of action modes by determining the up or down number based on signals subjected to frequency division and setting action modes, by detecting the rotational speed of signals generated by a rotary encoder and applying frequency division processing to the signals from the encoder at a frequency dividing ratio in response to the rotational speed. CONSTITUTION:A currently set action mode is displayed on the display 31 of the console panel 30 of a copying machine, and the rotary encoder 35 generates rotational direction signals and rotary angle signals, which are then inputted to a microprocessor CPU 41. The pulse width timer 42 of an encoder pulse interrupting processing means 46 detects the rotational speed of the encoder 35. A frequency dividing processing means 47 frequency-divides the inputted signals at a frequency dividing ratio in response to the detected speed of the encoder 35. According to the frequency-divided signals, the CPU 41 determines the numbers of up and down counters 44 and 45 counting the edges of encoder pulses, and sets various kinds of action modes.
