PURPOSE:To improve running performance, durability, weatherability and corosion resistance and to obtain a stable electromagnetic conversion characteristic by providing a protective lubricating layer contg. a compd. having a mercapto group and alkyl sulfate of >=10C on the surface of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film or this alloy film formed on base. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium is formed by forming the thin ferromagnetic metallic film on the nonmagnetic base and providing the protective lubricating layer contg. the compd. having the mercapto group and the alkyl sulfate of >=10C on the surface of said thin metallic film. The thickness of the protective lubricating layer is preferably 0.5-100mg/m , more preferably 2-20mg/m . The formation of said layer as a uniform film is difficult and the running performance and durability are not enough if the thickness is <=0.5mg/m . electromagnetic conversion characteristic is deteriorated by the spacing loss between head tapes if the thickness is >=100mg/m .
