Summary:PURPOSE:To separate and recover a cellulose produced by a bacterium capable of producing the cellulose from a culture medium in high purity and yield, by subjecting an mixture containing a bacterial cell capable of producing the cellulose and the cellulose to alkali treatment, ultrasonic treatment and then centrifugation. CONSTITUTION:A mixture containing a bacterium capable of producing a cellulose and the cellulose is treated by an alkali and then ultrasonic waves and successively centrifuged. In the above-mentioned alkali treatment, and aqueous solution of alkali such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, etc., is used in a concentration of 0.01-15wt%, preferably about 1wt%. If the alkali concentration is <0.01wt%, it is difficult to sufficiently break the bacterial cell and if the concentration is >15wt%, there is the possibility of causing depolymerization of the cellulose and structural change from cellulose I to cellulose II. The alkali treatment is carried out preferably at nearly ordinary temperature. As the ultrasonic waves, elastic waves whose frequency exceeds audible frequency area, preferably waves having >=10kHz frequency are used.
