Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain an optimum image pattern by data-compressing respectively plural binary signals and comparing a compressed data quantity corresponding to two adjoining slice levels in a size relation. CONSTITUTION:An original 3 is converted to an electric signal by a photoelectric converting element 1 and binalized, further, compressed and accommodated into areas 8a-8x. A counting deciding control circuit 10 starts from comparing the lowest adjoining compressed data quantity with the second low compressed data quantity and shifts gradually to the compressed data of the high slice level correspondence. The control circuit 10, when the compressed data quantity of the n-th slice level value correspondence is first increased to the compressed data quantity of an n-1-th slice level value correspondence, decides that the n-th slice level is optimum. The compressed data of the slice level correspondence are read from areas 8a-8x and outputted respectively to an image displaying control circuit 11 and an optical disk control device 13. Thus, the optimum image is displayed on a display tube 12 and the optimum image can be written in an optical disk 14.
