PURPOSE:To shorten time required for reading documents in any size and to lighten the burden imposed on a microprocessor by processing signals in order to detect the size of documents together with a read action and detecting the size the moment reading pictures on documents ends. CONSTITUTION:Data VD outputted from a document reader 1 is inputted to a document length detection part 4 and a document width detection part 5. The document length detection part 4 processes signals in order to detect the length of documents in a subscan direction, decides the termination of reading when lines decided to be black continue more than the number of set lines and outputs a read termination signal ED to the document reader 1 and the microprocessor 6 and a read line number signal NR to the microprocessor 6. The document width detection part 5 processes signals in order to detect the length of documents in a main scan direction, obtains the minimum value among the numbers of continuous black picture elements in the right-hand corner of each main scan line based on the data VD outputted from the document reader 1, and outputs minimum value data Nmin to the microprocessor 6.
