Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the title zirconium carbonitride-metal boride-based ceramic having high strength, hardness, and density by adding a specified amt. of metal boride powder to zirconium carbonitride powder, and sintering the obtained mixture. CONSTITUTION:From 5-95wt.%, based on the total weight, >=1 kind among the powder of a metal diboride such as ZrB2, HfB2, NbB2, TaB2, TiB2, CrB2, MnB2, MoB2, VB2 and AlB2, the powder of a metal monoboride such as ZrB, HfB, NbB, TaB, TiB, CrB, MnB, MoB, VB, and AlB, and the powder of an M2B5-type metal boride forming a hexagonal system at high temp. such as W2B5 and Mo2B5 is added to zirconium carbonitride powder. The mean particle diameter of the powder is preferably controlled to <=about 2mum. The obtained mixture is heated at about 1,500-2,000 deg.C for about 10-200min, and sintered. By this method, a ceramic sintered body having excellent resistance to oxidation, wear, corrosion, etc., and appropriately used as the material for cutting tools, mechanical parts having high wear resistance, etc., is obtained.
