Summary:PURPOSE:To attain excellent reading at all times by providing a transparent protection plate to a part of a read head facing an original and providing a member cleaning the protection plate aside the original running position and facing the running position of the read head. CONSTITUTION:The read head 14 has a dust prevention glass 15 as a transparent protection plate at a position facing the original 11 and the glass is arranged aside the original running position and facing the running position of the read head 14 and the cleaning member 21 cleaning the protection plate 15 of the read head 14 is provided. When the read head 14 completes the main scanning and returns to the home position in the direction of arrow, the upper face of the glass 15 is wiped out by the cleaning member 21. Thus, the glass is cleaned automatically and the dust prevention glass 15 is covered by the cleaning member 21 to prevent sticking of dust and dirt during the standby so as to attain excellent original reading.
