PURPOSE:To prevent uneven reading by comparing a picture pattern from each read element of a high density image sensor and a preceding picture pattern read by the image sensor earlier, detecting the position of the original end to be read already thereby controlling the paper feed motor. CONSTITUTION:After a width of an original 15 is read by the movement of the read unit in the main scanning direction, the original 15 is fed in the sub scanning direction by a prescribed quantity and at the time of the return of the read unit, the tail end position of the original read earlier is read by a high density image sensor 22 and the picture pattern of the high density image sensor 22 by each read element is compared with the picture pattern read earlier. Thus, the original end position after reading is detected and the paper feed quantity in the sub scanning direction is adjusted so that the one end of the image sensor 21 is made accurately coincident with the original end position thereby making the paper feed of the original accurate in the sub scanning direction. Thus, uneven reading is prevented.
