Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a hysteresis-free, high quality display device by constituting a selection period of a period when a 1st optical status is written, a period when a 2nd optical status is written and a charge adjusting period for setting the mean value of a voltage impressed on a display picture element to zero when no selection is made. CONSTITUTION:When a scan electrode is selected, a selection voltage 1 is impressed on the scan electrode. The selection period includes the period P1 when the 1st optical state is written in the display picture element, the period P2 when the 2nd optical status is written in the display picture element and the charge adjusting period P3 for setting the mean value of the voltage impressed on the display picture element when no selection is made. In the period of a waveform 5, the display picture element becomes highly transmittable in the period P1, whereas the optical state of the display picture element does not change in the periods P2 and P3. In the period of a waveform 6, in the period P1 the optical state is written as a highly transmittable one, in the period 2 the optical state changes to a low transmittable state, and in the period P3 the optical state does not change. As the voltage of waveforms 7 and 8 are below a threshold, which does not affect the optical state of the display picture element. Thus a high quality display body can be obt.
