PURPOSE:To shorten a time necessary for a reader to reach a read start point by providing the reader with a driving means to move a scanning means in the subscanning direction and a control means to vary the moving speed of the scanning means to a designated read start point and at the time of scanning for read. CONSTITUTION:Upon receiving a read area designation command to designate a square area Q to be the designated are of an original O, a CPU 31 generates drive timing pulses to vary the moving speed of the scanner 11 from a reference point P to the read start point R is the area Q, and at the time of scanning for read of an image information in the area Q. The pulses are such signals as providing that a motor 18 for scanning 18 is thrown up in a few steps by accelerating PPS to f2 at points P and R, and when a through area is reached, the PPS is kept at the f2 to move the scanner 11 at high speed, and further, decelerate the PPS to f1 before several lines from the point R, and thereafter the PPS is kept at the f1, so that the scanner 11 can move at its original actual read scanning time in the area Q.
