Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled compound on an industrial scale by a simple method, by thermally rearranging a specific 4-alkoxyquinolinecarboxylic acid ester in the presence of a specific alkylating agent. CONSTITUTION:A 4-alkoxyquinolinecarboxylic acid ester expressed by formula I (R and R are lower alkyl; R is H or lower alkyl; A is H, halogen, lower alkyl, alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, etc.) (e.g. ethyl 4-ethoxy-6,7-methylenedioxy-8- quinolinecarboxylate, etc.) is thermally rearranged in the presence of an alkylating agent, expressed by formula II (R is lower alkyl; X is halogen) or the formula R X (e.g. diethyl sulfate, etc.) preferably in a molar amount of 0.02-0.1 based on the ester expressed by formula I at 120-150 deg.C to afford the aimed compound (e.g. ethyl 1-ethyl-1,4-dihydro-6,7-methylenedioxy-4-oxo-3- quinolinecar-boxylate, etc.).
