Summary: | PURPOSE:To obtain an epoxy compound having a reduced hydrolyzable halogen content without raising epoxy equivalent, by heating an epoxy compound obtained from a phenol and epihalohydrin under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:First a monohydric or polyhydric phenol and an epihalohydrin are subjected to addition reaction and to ring closure reaction to give an epoxy compound. Then, the epoxy compound is heat-treated in the presence of an aprotic polar solvent (preferably dimethyl sulfoxide), an alcohol (preferably ethanol or isopropanol) and an alkaline metallic hydroxide (e.g. NaOH, etc.) at 30-100 deg.C. Removal of salts as by-products and the alkaline metallic hydroxide is preferably carried out by adding a hydrophobic solvent to the reaction product, neutralizing with sodium primary phosphate, etc., then washing the neutralized salts with water and distilling under reduced pressure to remove the solvent. |
