Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a 3'-deoxy-2'-ketoadenosine derivative useful as various intermediates in an extremely high yield, by treating a specific adenosine derivative with a metal alkoxide. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R and R are trityl or dimethoxytrityl; R is methanesulfonyl or toluenesulfonyl) is reacted with a metal alkoxide, e.g. magnesium methoxide, sodium lower alkoxide, in an amount of preferably 1-20mol equivalents, preferably at -70-+100 deg.C for 5min-12hr to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula II.
