Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain diacetyl cyanide in high yield while suppressing formation of vinyl alpha-cyanoacetate as a by-product, by reacting prussic acid with a ketene in an acetic ester in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Prussic acid is reacted with ketene in an acetic ester solvent containing 25-35% pressuic acid by the use of a tertiary amine such as triethanolamine, etc., as a catalyst at 15-25 deg.C to give the aimed substance. The amount of the tertiary amine used in the reaction is >=1% based on prussic acid. Diacetyl cyanide is useful as a raw material for C-alkyl or C- halogenoalkyltartronic acid, a synthetic intermediate for amino acid, barbituric acid and oxazolidine derivative and as a raw material for vinylidene cyanide, an intermediate for piezoelectric element material.
