Summary:PURPOSE:To improve working efficiency by moving a removing means to the defect position detected by a detecting means and removing the defect thereby making online detection and removal without stopping the rolling operation. CONSTITUTION:A control circuit 34 reads a flaw position signal from a memory 33 and feeds a flaw removal start signal and the flaw position signal to a driving circuit 36 after a sensor 11 makes scanning in the longitudinal direction of a roll 1. The driving circuit 36 moves a moving member 22 along a rail 23 and stops the member 22 in the position of the flaw detected by the sensor 11. The circuit 36 rotates the grinding wheel part of a grinder 21 and tilts the member 22 to press the grinding wheel part of the grinder 21 to the roll 1. The peripheral surface of the roll 1 is thereby ground and the seizure flaw of rolling existing on the peripheral surface is removed.
