PURPOSE:To reduce the thickness and weight of an image display device by structuring an optical fiber screen so that it is switched between reflection and transmission in synchronism with the vertical period of a video signal. CONSTITUTION:Image information is guided to the optical fiber screen 2 through optical fibers coupled optically corresponding to respective picture elements. The optical fiber 2 is switched between reflection and transmission in synchronism with the vertical period of the video signal and image information of one horizontal period which is projected in order is synchronized with the position shift of a reflecting surface to make a vertical scan on the optical fiber screen 2. Light projected from the optical fiber screen 2 is shifted in projection position and when the optical fiber screen 2 is seen globally, a normal television image and a similar picture are obtained and the set size corresponds to the size when the optical fiber screen 2 and a color video source 1 are incorporated in an external frame 4. Consequently, the thickness and weight are reduced greatly.
