Summary:PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain oxygen concn. detection output over the lean and rich regions of an air/fuel ratio with good linearity, by providing a first sensor and a second sensor in a communicated state and further arranging a heater. CONSTITUTION:First and second gas stagnation chambers 2, 3 connected through a communication hole 5, a reference gas chamber 6 introducing the open air and an electrode protecting hole 7 are formed in an oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte member 1 and the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine flows in an introducing hole 4. Heater elements 19, 20 are provided on the outer wall surface of the reference gas chamber 6 and the outer wall surface of the electrode protecting hole 7 not only to uniformly heat first and second oxygen pump elements 15, 17 and first and second battery elements 16, 18 but also to attain to enhance the heat insulating property in the solid electrolyte member 1. In a transient operating state, a fist sensor low in diffusion resistance is selected and, in a steady operating state, a second sensor high in diffusion resistance is selected.
