Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the alkali resistance and the electrolyte retention of a separator by making it from a microporous nonwoven fabric which is made of polyethylene or polypropylene fiber and contains a silica micropowder. CONSTITUTION:A mixture composed of a low-density polyethylene pellet or the like, a silica micropowder and a plasticizer is subjected to injection molding while being heated and kneaded. Next, after a nonwoven fabric is made from the resulting fiber, the plasticizer is extracted into a trichloroethylene solution by ultrasonic wave to form many minute holes, thereby making a separator for a sealed alkaline storage battery. This separator has improved electrolyte retention because it consists of a microporous nonwoven fabric, which is made of polyethylene fiber or the like highly resistant to alkalines at high temperatures and contains a silica micropowder. Therefore, use of this separator enables production of a battery having superior charge-and-discharge characteristics at high temperatures.
