Summary:PURPOSE:To provide an agent for improving hepatic function, containing dolichol and/or its pharmacologically permissible ester as active component, having low side effect and toxicity and exhibiting mild physiological effect. CONSTITUTION:The objective hepatic function-improving agent contains the compound of formula I (group of formula II is trans-isoprene unit; group of formula III is cis-isoprene unit; n is integer of 12-18) and/or its pharmacologically permissible salt as an active component. Since the agent has the above activity, it is useful as a remedy for improving the hepatic function of a person having lowered physical strength, especially of an aged person or patient of grave disease. It is administered at a dose of generally 0.05-1,000mg/kg daily, preferably 0.1-100mg/kg daily, especially 0.2-50mg/kg daily in 1-several doses. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by extracting from the organ of mammal.
