Summary:PURPOSE:To lower the fitting position accuracy of a mechanical image sensor by providing a photoelectric transducer more than the number of the picture element included in the effective reading width of an original as an image sensor and using the photoelectric transducer corresponding to the width of the original. CONSTITUTION:An image sensor 2 arranges many photoelectric transducers like a CCD linearly and the number is made more than the number of the picture element included in the effective reading width W of an original 1. When the (n)-th photoelectric transducers from the (m)-th photoelectric transducer counting from the left edge of the image sensor 2 is an effective photoelectric transducer, a switch 4 adjusts so as to set (m) to a comparator 12 at the time of assembling the device. An output signal (a) from respective photoelectric transducers 2 is processed by a picture signal processing circuit 6, comes to be a binary picture signal (b), and when the signal comes to be the effective photoelectric transducer, a memory writing enable signal (h) is given from a memory control circuit 10 to a picture signal memory 7 and the binary picture signal (b) is written to the picture signal memory 7.
