Summary:NEW MATERIAL:N-(3-chloro-4-isopropylphenyl)-2-methylvaleramide. USE:A highly selective herbicide for foliar treatment. Useful especially as a herbicide for wheat (a gramineous crop). It gives absolutely no phytotoxicity even at an extremely high rate of application and exhibits remarkable selectivity. PREPARATION:The titled compound can be produced by reacting 3-chloro-4- isopropylaniline with 2-methylvaleryl halide or 2-methylvaleric acid anhydride in the absence of solvent or in a solvent such as benzene at -10-+150 deg.C, preferably 5-90 deg.C for 1min-5hr. When the acid anhydride is used as a reactant, a base such as triethylamine, sodium bicarbonate, etc., may be used as an acid acceptor. The titled compound is applied at a rate of 0.1-10kg, preferably 0.2-3kg per 1 ha for weed killing.
