Summary:PURPOSE:To produce an optically active cis-imidazolidinedicarboxylic acid derivative useful as an intermediate for synthesizing biotin, etc., efficiently, by using an esterase producing bacterium belonging to the genus Bacillus or esterase derived from the bacterium. CONSTITUTION:An esternase producing bacterium such as Bacillus sp. VA-47 strain (FERM P-8730) belonging to the genus Bacillus including alkali-philic Bacillus or esterase derived from the esterase producing bacteria is brought into contact with a cis-imidazolidinedicarboxylic acid diester shown by formula II (R is lower alkyl group; Bzl is benzyl group) to give an optically active cis-imidazolidinedicarboxylic acid derivative shown by formula I (R and Bzl are as shown above).
