Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound important as a synthetic intermediate for a thromboxane A2-production suppressing substance, by reacting the corresponding diester with sodium borohydride in a proper solvent in the presence of a lower alcohol, thereby selectively reducing only one of the esters. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II such as 6- hydroxymethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthalenecarboxylic acid methyl ester can be produced in high purity and yield by reacting a compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are lower alkyl; n is 1-5) such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester with sodium borohydride or a metal borohydride other than sodium borohydride at 20-50 deg.C in a solvent such as ether, tert-alcohol, etc., in the presence of 1.5-3mol of a lower alcohol based on 1mol of the compound of formula I.
