PURPOSE:To execute the energy-saving of the processing of a dictionary retrieving as much as possible and to realize the use of an electronic dictionary at higher speed by dividing the electronic dictionary into plural dividing memory area and using the regularity to store word data. CONSTITUTION:After a dividing memory area DN having the possibility of the existence of a retrieving word is searched out, the common part of the head spelling of all words and the head spelling of the retrieving word in the dividing memory area is judged by a common character determining means C3. Consequently, when a comparing means C4 compares the identity with the retrieving word concerning respective words in the dividing memory area DN, immediately, the comparison of the part is unnecessary and it is sufficient only by executing the comparing work by the character except the common character. Thus, the retrieving of the electronic dictionary constituted with the memory area as plural dividing memory areas can be completed in a very short time.
