Summary:PURPOSE:To enable the multiple recording of information on a wavelength level, by constituting built-up films so that absorption wavelengths of light are mutually different between two arbitrary built-up films and irradiating a recording medium with light of which the wavelength is variable to perform at least one of the writing and reading of information. CONSTITUTION:When a recording medium 5 consisting of built-up films L1-Ln (n is a natural number), all of which have different absorption wavelengths, each obtained by building up a monomolecular film containing org. coloring matter in the molecule thereof is formed on a substrate 4, the built-up films have different absorption wavelengths lambda1-lambdan6. When writing is performed to the recording medium 5 using layer beam as light 7 of which the wavelength is made variable with respect to the recording medium 5 wherein the built-up films L1-Ln of monomolecular films take a J-state, only the built-up film wherein the wavelength lambda is equal to the absorption wavelength thereof can change to a new J*state 8. By using the presence and absence of the change in the absorption spectrum characteristic of the built-up film as signals of binary codes of 0, 1, (n) informations can be written to one recording point on a wavelength level.
