PURPOSE:To always read an original stably and surely by bringing the titled reader into the ready state automatically after it is confirmed that each luminescence characteristic and a luminescent energy ratio of a light source of plural colors are made constant. CONSTITUTION:A reference reflection plate 13 is lighted by a fluorescent lamp 14R having a red color component of a spectral radiation characteristic, a fluorescent lamp 14G of green component and a fluorescent lamp 14B of blue component. The reflected light from the plate 13 by the lighting is made incident on a CCD color image sensor 16 via a convergent rod lens array 15, converted into an electric signal and a red component signal SR, a green component signal SG and a blue component signal SB are obtained by a signal processing circuit 17. In turning on the power source, since the fluorescent lamps 14R, 14G, 14B are not warmed up sufficiently for a prescribed time, the luminescent ratio of each color is unbalanced and each signal level is also at a low state. The state is confirmed by an automatic monitor circuit 18, and when each signal reaches a predetermined level and ratio, a ready signal is generated to start the read of the original 11.
