Summary:PURPOSE:To perform recognition of a position without receiving the effect of disturbance, by utilizing an input image as a reference image used at the time of pattern matching processing performed in order to perform the recognition of the position and renewing the reference image as needed. CONSTITUTION:When the image of a body to be recognized is formed by an ITV camera, an image signal SA is outputted and converted to a digital value SB to be stored in a first image memory 7 as input image data. Reference image data is stored in a second image memory 8. In a matching circuit 11, the reference image is matched with the input image so that the position thereof is shifted with respect to the input image to investigate coincidence and non- coincidence at every corresponding picture element and the coincidence degree of a picture as a whole is calculated at that time. By this method, the position of the body to be recognized is detected by utilizing the overlapping of the reference image and the input image.
