Summary:NEW MATERIAL:Propioxanthine A and B of formula (R is H or methyl) and their salt, having the following physical and chemical properties. Appearance, acidic white powder; color reaction; negative to ninhydrin reaction, positive to the reaction after hydrolysis; solubility, soluble in water, methanol, etc., and insoluble in ethyl acetate, etc.; molecular formula, C17H29N3O6 for A, and C18H31N3O6 for B. USE:Encephalinase B-inhibiting substance useful as an analgesic agent. PREPARATION:A microbial strain belonging to Kitasatosporia genus and capable of producing propioxanthine A or B [e.g. Kitasatosporia sp. SANK60684 (FERM- P No.7581)] is cultured preferably in a liquid medium at 5.5-8pH and about 28 deg.C under shaking, and the objective substance is separated from the culture product.
