Summary:PURPOSE:To determine the crop length through operating a conveying unit only once, by stopping stick works at the preset position through striking these works against a stopper set on the back surface of a shear, in cutting the top crop of plural stick works with a cold shear. CONSTITUTION:In cutting the top crop of stick works 3, at first, a stopper 22 of a stopper unit which is set on the back surface of a cold shear 5, is held at the preset waiting position (a). This waiting position (a) is previously deter mined according to the length l of retreat of the stopper 22 which is retreated as the stick works 3 strike this stopper 22, and the length t of the top crop. Then, a bundle of stick works 3 sent from a cooling floor is conveyed by a runout table, slowed down just before (about 300mm before) the stopper 22 to the creep speed, struck against the contact face 23 of the stopper 22, and stopped automatically at the position of the top crop length t. Next, the stopper 22 is brought up from the pass line through operating a hydraulic cylinder 17 for lifting, and after that, the bundle of stick works 3 is cut with a cutter 12.
