PURPOSE:To inhibit generation of NoX<-> and to prevent several problems accompanying generation of NOXin the aerobic treatment of waste water contg. NH3 by retarding activity of nitrifying bacteria by the irradiation of ultraviolet rays. CONSTITUTION:In a process for treating liquid contg. org. carbon compds. and reducing nsitrogen compds., the activity of microorganism which generates NOX<-> by oxidizing the nitrogen compds. is reduced relatively to the activity of decomposing bacteria for org. carbon compds. by the irradiation with ultraviolet rays. Thus, generation of NOX<-> in the treatiang stage of org. carbon compds. is retarded. By this method, several problems caused in accompany with generation of NOX<->, such as deterioration of water quality due to increase of suspended matters in the treated water caused by the deposition of gaseous N2 generated by the denitrification phenomenon in a settling tank in the treatment using activated sludge, or increase of COD due to NO2<-> are prevented.
