Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent the drivability from being deteriorated due to quick change in air-fuel ratio by enriching air-fuel ratio used at a transient time with respect to air-fuel ratio used at normal operation time. CONSTITUTION:On the basis of the operating condition of an engine, a lean mixture control condition determining means determines whether an engine is placed under the leaning control or not. A transient/normal state determining means determines whether the engine is in a transient state or not. When the engine is placed under the leaning control but placed in a transient state, air-fuel ratio is made richer than that used in the normal operation, whereby preventing the drivability from being deteriorated due to quick change in air-fuel ratio.
