PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic tape having stable quality by disposing reproducing and reproducing head, measuring the magnetic characteristics of the magnetic tape under production and controlling vapor deposition conditions in accordance with the results thereof. CONSTITUTION:A signal is recorded by the recording head 8 onto the tape 7 which is delivered from a delivery roller 2 in a vacuum vessel and on which metallic vapor 6 is deposited by evaporation with a vapor deposition roller 3. The signal is reproduced by the reproducing head 8 and is processed, by which the quality of the tape 7 is measured. The quality includes satd. magnetic flux, frequency characteristic, dostortion factor, etc. The vapor deposition conditions are so controlled as to increase the ejection rate of the vapor 6 if, for example, the satd. magnetic flux decreases and the ionization rate and acceleration conditions are controlled as well in the case of a cluster ion beam. The magnetic tape having the stable quality is thus obtd.
